AC to DC Converter: Converting 220V AC to 12V DC

An AC to DC converter changes alternating current (AC) from the power outlet into direct current (DC) that can be used by low-voltage electronic devices.. The most common and simple way to do this uses a transformer, four diodes, a large capacitor, and a few other components.

Components Required:

  1. 12v step down transformer
  2. Diodes- IN4007 (4)
  3. 2200 µF capacitor
  4. 1 KΩ Resistor
  5. AC plug

Safety Note

Always unplug from the AC supply when assembling or adjusting the circuit. High voltage is dangerous.

This circuit is simple, cheap, and commonly used for low- to medium-power DC devices at home.

Circuit

How It Works

  • The 12V step-down transformer takes high voltage AC from the wall (like 230V) and lowers it to a safer 12V level.
  • The AC voltage then passes through four IN4007 diodes arranged as a bridge rectifier. This setup only lets electricity flow in one direction, turning the AC (which goes back and forth) into a bumpy DC signal.
  • The 2200 µF capacitor smoothes out the bumps in the DC, storing energy and releasing it steadily so your device gets a more even voltage.
  • The 1 KΩ resistor is sometimes used to discharge the capacitor safely or limit current; in some cases, it can be part of an indicator circuit (like connecting an LED as a “power on” sign).
  • The AC plug is just how you connect your circuit to the wall outlet.
  • If you want really steady DC voltage, a voltage regulator chip can be added after the capacitor, but in simple circuits it’s often not required unless sensitive equipment is used.

Safety Disclaimer:
Working with AC mains electricity can be hazardous and may cause electric shock or fire if proper precautions are not taken. This project involves handling live AC voltage from the power outlet, so it is recommended only for individuals with experience and understanding of electrical safety procedures. Always unplug the circuit before assembling or modifying it, use insulated tools, work in a dry environment, and take all necessary safety measures. If you are not confident or trained, please seek assistance from a qualified electrician or avoid attempting this project.
